What We Offer
Athletics
Participation in athletics helps young people become more involved and take ownership of their education. Sports provide a release for young people as well as the opportunity to express themselves in their unique manner. Playing sports also affords students the opportunity to learn to budget their time and realize that their academic endeavors relate to making good choices and earning freedoms. They learn to be more discipline and take responsibility within their sports and therefore, within their classrooms.
Fine and Performing Arts
At Birney K-8 School, we are passionate about integrating Fine and Performing Arts into our students’ daily learning experience. Our arts programs go beyond traditional academics, offering students the chance to explore their creativity and develop self-expression through music, visual arts, dance, and theater. Whether it’s learning an instrument, performing on stage, or creating a masterpiece in the art studio, our students engage in rich, hands-on experiences that foster both artistic and academic growth. The arts are woven into our curriculum to enhance critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. By offering a wide range of artistic opportunities, we encourage our students to discover their talents, gain confidence, and cultivate a lifelong appreciation for the arts, all while developing essential skills that prepare them for future success.
Clubs
Birney K-8 School offers a variety of clubs that foster leadership, creativity, and academic excellence. Students can join the Junior National Honor Society, participate in Michigan First financial literacy programs, or take part in advanced coursework as AP students. Our Yearbook Club provides a creative outlet for students interested in design, photography, and publishing, while our Battle of the Books teams consistently excel in city-wide reading competitions. Additionally, the Student Council allows students to lead initiatives, represent their peers, and contribute to both the school and community through service projects and fundraisers.
